Darling antique, early 1800s French engraving. This is an original from France. This is not a reproduction. The Frame measures 12" x 10" x .60" and still has the original leaded glass. There are no cracks, chips, or breaks of any kind. The antique frame is black and made of wood. There is a wire metal twit on the back for hanging. The back edges were originally covered in a script document, but some has been torn away. This is a fabulous engraving depicting Atala. Atala is the heroine of François-René de Châteaubriand's 1801 masterpiece. Atala is portrayed as a young woman torn between her deep passion for a man from an enemy tribe and her religious duty. A cultural icon of early French Romanticism, Atala represents the dramatic conflict between passionate earthly love and religious duty. This is a beautiful piece of history and a look into French Romanticism.
