Beautiful unfinished 18th-century ecclesiastical applique depicting Mary. This piece was found in Provence, France. Hand-stitched blue robe and white gown, standing on a bed of clouds. This piece would most likely have been finished with a paper face and head and applied to another piece to be framed. There are gold metal thread accent stitches on the robe, defining how it would flow when worn. The cloth measures approximately 8" x 8"; however, the top and bottom have both been stitched under with tack stitches. Most likely to complete the top and bottom without the extra cotton interfering.
This piece could easily be finished and framed. It is a rare and fabulous find, given its age and content.
