Beautiful antique 1800s hand-stitched Sacred Heart. This Sacred Heart reliquary was very popular during the late 1800s. It was fashioned to be placed in a home, either in a devotional corner or near the bedside. The oval frame and metal backing are trademarks of this type of relic. This is a hand-stitched piece we found in Provence, France. The Sacred Heart is on a marbled background in a metal frame with convex glass. The glass is in perfect condition. The frame is gilt, with a medal and age-related patina. I took the piece apart to clean the glass, and there is a cotton piece on the back in English that reads "Cease! the Sacred Heart of Jesus is with me". The back is silk paper with a brass loop hanger st the top.
It is in fantastic antique condition: the design is intact, the fabric colors remain brilliant, and the glass has no chips or cracks.
It is a magnificent Sacred Heart ex-voto purchased in Provence!
