Extremely rare antique symbolic 1700s slate hanging. This piece shows a woman resting on an anchor with a feather on the left side and three angels on the right. In the background, there are sailing ships.

The anchor is a symbol that has a rich history and a variety of meanings and symbols associated with it. It has been used for thousands of years and has been adopted by various cultures and civilizations throughout history. The anchor is often related to the idea of stability, security, hope, persistence, and courage, and has been used in a variety of art and cultural contexts.

In antique French symbolism and art, a lady depicted alongside an anchor often represents hope, particularly within a maritime or religious context.

The feather is often associated with freedom, transcendence, and a connection to the divine.

The angels are often depicted as intermediaries between the divine and humanity, representing messages from heaven, divine protection, guidance, and spiritual presence.

This is a piece of history representing someone's Christian belief in the divine and all it has to offer. This probably hung in the household of a maritime family. It was a well-loved piece, having been broken and then repaired. I am not surprised, given its age of over 225 years.

Truly a beautiful piece of history, culture, and art.
